CLUB NEWS

About Us

Being a Lion means so much to each of us. It’s about serving our communities, and the joy of seeing lives changed. It’s about fellowship, and the lifelong bonds that we share. It’s about giving, and seeing our generosity flourish. But as much as being a Lion means to us, it means even more to the people we serve.

We take pride in our safe service and the impact that we make. We continue to inspire our community and encourage others to put their kindness in action as Lions. We keep giving because so many are depending on us. That is what it means to be a Lion.

Lions are people who get involved in humanitarian efforts locally, nationally, and internationally.

People like you can find community service and volunteer opportunities in Lions through:

· Mentoring

· Leadership Development

· Medical Research Fundraising

· Disaster Relief

If  you would like to serve your community through the many volunteer opportunities in Lions then please contact us or join us at one of our meetings.

World Festival of Magic

The Club is the Toowoomba host for the World Festival of Magic. Tickets are not for sale to the public. Tickets are sponsored by businesses and then given back to children in need. The Show lasts for between 60 and 90 minutes. Our show is intended to be enjoyed by “special needs” children, many of whom often need wheelchairs or assistance.

Australia Day Awards

The Club has members on the organising committee of the Highfields Australia Day Awards. We also cook the breakfast at this event. The event is sponsored by the Toowoomba Regional Council.

The Homeless

We have supported the homeless  by working with local community groups. We have also purchased Backpack Beds for the Homeless and made them available through Base Services in Toowoomba.

We have also supported Tony's Kitchen with donations.

Youth of the Year

The Lions Youth of the Year Program was established in 1964, with the objective of developing and honing participants' skills associated with interview technique, personal interaction, networking, public speaking and 'thinking on your feet'. As students leave school and enter employment or further education, such skills will be invaluable tools in establishing positive career paths. The Lions Club of Highfields North Eastern Downs hold a heat each year in conjunction with local High Schools. The winner goes on to compete at the levels leading up to the District, State and National finals.

Our Club ran the Region Final of Youth of the Year in 2026.

Children of Courage

These Awards recognise a very special group of young Australians and their families. There are many awards that recognise the achievements of young people, however children with special needs are not always given recognition. These Awards are specially designed to recognise the courage and bravery shown by these children every day.

Events

The Lions Club ran the local Highfields Block Party for several years. This was very successful but when the Village Shopping Centre changed hands the new owners would not support it continuing.

We then started the car Show and Shine in 2015 as a means of providing a Community Activity within the Highfields area coinciding with the Carnival of Flowers. It was held at the Cabarlah Showgrounds annually on the Sunday of the Carnival Parade weekend. After Covid several auto events in Southern Queensland moved into this time slot and the event was no longer viable.

Local Community Groups are invited to raise funds at our events where appropriate. This has included  Leos, Scouts and the local QCWA Branch in the past.

Supporting Local Needs

We receive requests for help from various local sources. In the past this has included providing a medical pressure suit for a child that could not be funded under NDIS, cleaning up an elderly person’s garden and helping out at the Pioneer Village.
